Bathinda, : The Punjab State Games for girls' under-14 were declared open by Divisional Commissioner Faridkot Division Harjit Singh in an impressive ceremony held today at the Multipurpose Sports Stadium.
The Divisional Commissioner Harjeet Singh who was the chief guest during this three days sporting event took the salute from 2200 participants from different districts of Punjab during the march past.
While addressing the packed stadium, Harjeet Singh urged the students to focus their complete attention towards their respective sporting event for the next two days. He said that at this tender age one should dedicate extra hours every day for good health.
"Punjab Government is paying extra attention on sports and this is a part of the ongoing drive of the government to divert young students' attention towards sports," Harjeet further said. He pointed out that the students must work hard to achieve their set target to succeed in life.
Appreciating the efforts of the organizers, the Divisional Commissioner asked the sports coaches to encourage the budding players in team and individual events and they should also ensure that the players' stay and travelling should be hassle free. The Chief Guest also administered the oath of sportsmanship to all the participating sportspersons during this occasion.
Assistant Director of Sports Department Kartar Singh said that 11 events including boxing, basketball, badminton, kabaddi (national style), kho-kho, football, handball, wrestling, judo, volleyball and table tennis would be held at different venues in Bathinda city.
"300 employees and officers are assigned different duties for the smooth conduct of all these games and these officials are also responsible for the comfortable stay and travelling in the city," Kartar Singh said.
During the opening ceremony budding boxers Gagandeep Kaur, Neetu, Manmeet Kaur and Komal performed the torch ceremony.
A cultural program was also organized during the occasion wherein the welcome song and gidha was performed by the students from Guru Nanak Dev Public School.
Deputy Commissioner Praneet, SSP Nanak Singh, ADC (g) Sukhpreet Sidhu, Congress president (urban) Arun Wadhavan, PPCC General Secretary and Cooperative Bank Chairman Tehal Sandhu, PPCC Secretary Pawan Mani, Harwinder Kochhar were among the others who were also present during the occasion.
